University of Maryland Latest College Targeted by False Shooting Report

Up to 20 colleges and universities across the U.S., including the University of Maryland, have recently been targeted by false active shooter reports.

Early Tuesday morning, around 4:15 a.m., University of Maryland Campus Police were alerted by Prince George’s County Public Safety Communications about a possible active shooter near McKeldin Library. However, officers quickly determined there was no threat. An officer already patrolling the area confirmed there was no suspicious activity.

“This was similar to other recent incidents at schools nationwide — a false report,” said Lt. Rosanne Hoaas, spokesperson for the University of Maryland Campus Police.

Hoaas encouraged students and staff to familiarize themselves with campus safety tools, such as signing up for UMD Alerts and downloading the UMD Guardian app. In a real emergency, she advised staying calm, getting to a safe location, and notifying authorities.

She also reminded the community that campus police are always available. “We’re here 24/7, 365,” Hoaas said. “If you call, someone will answer and respond.”

The university has posted safety resources online for students, faculty, and staff.
