Two men injured in pressurized water tank explosion at Washington County cement plant

HALFWAY, Md. — Two adult men were airlifted to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore after an explosion involving a pressurized water tank on a concrete truck at the Thomas, Bennett & Hunter Cement Plant on Hopewell Road in Washington County.

Halfway Fire Chief Jamie Drawbaugh reported that both victims sustained shrapnel injuries to the face but did not suffer burns. Maryland State Police Troopers transported the injured men to Baltimore for treatment.

The explosion occurred around 12:30 p.m., triggering a large emergency response that included multiple fire and rescue units and at least two Maryland State Police helicopters. Officials from Maryland Occupational Safety and Health are investigating the cause of the incident.

First responders are expected to remain at the scene as authorities continue their investigation.
