BOWIE, Md. — When a tree collapsed onto a car during Tuesday’s storm, trapping a family inside, 15-year-old Zachary Canter quickly stepped in to help.
The Bowie High School student was among several bystanders who stopped to assist a mother and her three children. Drawing on his lifeguard and Junior ROTC training, Canter retrieved a first aid kit from the vehicle’s trunk and began treating the injured mother while waiting for emergency crews to arrive.
“I put on gloves, cleaned the wounds, and did my best to bandage them,” Canter told WUSA9.
The car had been traveling down the road when the tree suddenly fell, crushing the roof on the driver’s side. The mother was later removed from the vehicle, and the children were safely helped out.
