A Maryland teenager accused of injuring five teens in an April shooting has been acquitted.
According to defense attorney Tom Mooney, his 16-year-old client, who cannot be named due to legal restrictions, was set for release on Wednesday after spending over six months in detention.
“A young man has been acquitted today for a crime he did not commit,” Mooney stated. He criticized the investigation, claiming law enforcement focused on building a case against his client instead of considering other suspects or exploring additional evidence.
The shooting occurred on April 19 during an unsanctioned senior skip day party at a park in Greenbelt, Maryland. Two teens, aged 14 and 16, were arrested following the incident. Mooney argued that investigators exhibited “tunnel vision,” neglecting other potential leads, which led to a trial where the court ultimately found his client not guilty due to insufficient evidence and reasonable doubt.
The second teen accused in the case is scheduled for trial in December, according to WJLA-TV. All five injured teens were treated at the hospital and later released.
