Superintendent Says Frederick County Public Schools Are Prepared With Emergency Protocols for Situations Like School Shootings

Dr. Cheryl Dyson, Superintendent of Frederick County Public Schools, commended the efforts of the district’s school resource officers while discussing school safety measures during an interview on WFMD’s Morning News Express.

She explained that Frederick County schools follow “standard response protocols,” which provide consistent procedures for handling emergencies such as severe weather, fires, or intruders. “We investigate every threat that comes into the schools,” Dr. Dyson noted.

In addition to these protocols, state regulations require every school to maintain a threat assessment management team to help prepare for potential emergencies. “We also keep our exterior doors locked and ensure internal doors are secured to keep students safe,” she added.

Dr. Dyson emphasized that one of the district’s greatest strengths lies in its collaboration with local law enforcement. “One of our biggest assets is our partnership with our school resource officers,” she said. “We’re very grateful to the city and Sheriff Chuck Jenkins for assigning an officer to every high school, and they also assist middle and elementary schools when needed.”

Beyond their safety roles, Dr. Dyson noted that many of these officers serve as mentors and positive role models for students.

She also stressed the importance of vigilance and student involvement in maintaining school safety. “We always remind our students—if you see something, say something. And if you see something on social media, report it; don’t repost it,” Dr. Dyson said.
