Students say they were confronted by an unknown individual near Crofton Elementary School

Law enforcement authorities are actively searching for a man believed to be driving a gray, four-door sedan following a reported incident near Crofton Elementary School in Washington. According to police officials, the situation was brought to their attention at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Monday, when reports of suspicious behavior in the area were received.

Initial findings from the investigation indicate that earlier that same morning, three middle school students were standing near the elementary school while waiting for their school bus. During this time, an unfamiliar adult male approached them while seated inside his vehicle. The individual reportedly instructed the children to enter the car. The students refused to comply with the request.

After the children declined, the man exited the vehicle and repeated his demand, insisting that they get into the car and stating that he intended to take them to school. The children later told police that they did not recognize the man and felt unsafe. Acting quickly, they ran away from the area to avoid further interaction. Shortly afterward, the driver departed the scene.

The children were able to reach their respective schools without physical harm. Once they arrived safely, they informed a trusted adult about the encounter, which led to the police being notified. At this stage of the investigation, authorities have not released additional identifying information about the suspect, including a physical description or vehicle license plate details.

In response to the incident, officials are encouraging parents and guardians to use this event as an opportunity to reinforce important safety practices with their children. Recommendations include having children walk together in groups or with a trusted companion whenever possible, emphasizing awareness of their surroundings, and reminding them not to accept rides, items, or assistance from individuals they do not know. Parents are also advised to create a clear plan with their children on how to respond if approached by a stranger and to stress the importance of immediately reporting anything unusual, frightening, or uncomfortable to a responsible adult such as a parent, guardian, teacher, school staff member, or police officer.

Detectives continue to investigate the matter and are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has relevant information to come forward. Members of the public can contact the Anne Arundel County Police Department at 410-222-8760 or submit tips anonymously through the department’s tip line at 410-222-4700.
