State’s Attorney Braveboy Offers Update on Case Involving Former Coach Accused of Fatally Strangling Girlfriend

Sentencing Set for June in Murder Case of Prince George’s County Nurse

ACCOKEEK, Md. — Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy provided an update Friday on the murder case involving Carl Kearney, Jr., a former NFL practice squad player and high school football coach who admitted to killing his girlfriend, 38-year-old Patrina Best.

Kearney pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection with Best’s death. Sentencing is scheduled for June, and he now faces up to 30 years in prison.

Best, a traveling nurse, was found strangled at her parents’ home in Accokeek on the morning of February 17, 2024. Later that same day, Kearney walked into a police station and confessed, leading to his immediate arrest and later indictment.

“This is a heartbreaking case that deeply affected our entire county,” Braveboy said during the briefing. “Losing a loved one in such a tragic way is unimaginable.”

Investigators reported that the couple had spent time together prior to the incident, sharing dinner and enjoying each other’s company before an argument turned violent. Authorities confirmed the act was not premeditated.

Initially charged with both first- and second-degree murder, Kearney ultimately accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to second-degree murder.

Best’s family described her as warm, selfless, and nurturing. They shared that she once paused her career to care for her sick grandmother.

“Patrina brought love and laughter into our lives,” her family said in a statement. “She was a bright light, and her absence will be deeply felt every day.”

Kearney, originally from Griffin, Georgia, had been recognized for his role mentoring at-risk students and coaching youth football. His legacy has been overshadowed by the tragic crime.

Braveboy also used the news conference to discuss the plea agreement, its impact on the grieving family, and to highlight the broader issue of domestic violence within the community.
