State Officials Investigating Deadly Shooting Involving Cheverly Police Chief

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. — Authorities are investigating a fatal police shooting involving Cheverly Police Chief David Morris. The Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division is leading the case.

The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon in Riverdale, during an ongoing investigation into an earlier stabbing. According to police, officers and Chief Morris were on patrol in the 6600 block of Greenland Street when they located a vehicle linked to the stabbing.

Soon after, they encountered a man outside who was armed with knives and believed to be the suspect. Police say the man charged at Chief Morris, prompting him to fire his weapon. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, and two knives were recovered.

Chief Morris has been placed on restricted duty while the investigation is underway.
