State Fire Marshal Investigating Westminster Barn Fire That Killed Four Horses

WESTMINSTER, Md. — The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a barn fire that broke out Sunday afternoon in Westminster, killing four horses.

According to the Westminster Volunteer Fire Company, the fire was reported shortly after 1 p.m. in the 200 block of Bell Road. When crews arrived, they found heavy flames and smoke coming from a barn measuring roughly 100 by 50 feet. Fire departments from across Carroll County and neighboring jurisdictions responded to assist.

Firefighters faced challenges due to a water main break on nearby Royer Road, forcing crews to rely on tankers to haul water to the scene. Strong winds also carried embers that sparked smaller fires in surrounding fields. A brush unit from the Reese and Community Volunteer Fire Company worked to contain those spot fires and prevent them from spreading.

It took several hours to bring the blaze under control and complete extensive overhaul efforts. Damage is estimated at $250,000.

Officials say a 25-year-old man suffered first-degree burns to his right hand and was transported to the hospital. Two others sustained minor injuries but declined further treatment.
