Maryland Task Force One, a FEMA Urban Search and Rescue team, is currently deployed in Henderson County, western Kentucky, to assist local emergency crews after severe storms and flooding swept through the region.
Team leader Doug Hinkle told WTOP that the unit conducted several water rescues on Tuesday, utilizing both boats and shallow-water walking techniques.
On Wednesday, the team began conducting “windshield surveys” — driving through affected neighborhoods to assess damage, check conditions, and identify residents in need of evacuation.
The team has been operating just across the Ohio River from Evansville, Indiana, in an area where rising water levels are expected to crest in the coming days, heightening concern.
Heavy rainfall from ongoing storms has caused major flooding and claimed at least 23 lives, including 10 in Tennessee, according to the Associated Press.
“We had to reroute because of flooded roads,” Hinkle said, describing the difficult travel conditions.
Maryland Task Force One includes personnel from fire departments, police, and rescue services. The current team includes members from Montgomery, Howard, and Frederick counties, as well as Washington, D.C.
Hinkle emphasized the team’s commitment to supporting recovery efforts: “We’re here as long as we’re needed. We stand shoulder to shoulder with Kentucky responders.”
