Retired Firefighter on House Arrest Amid Decades-Old Sexual Abuse Allegations

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. — A retired firefighter is under house arrest after being charged with sexually abusing a teenage volunteer more than three decades ago.

John Inman, 61, who retired from the Prince George’s County Fire Department in 2017 and later moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting a junior firefighter between 1991 and 1996. The alleged victim was between 13 and 17 years old during the time of the abuse.

The junior firefighter program allows teenagers to volunteer and gain experience with a fire department. Inman, however, was a paid employee of the county fire department at the time and not a volunteer himself.

According to police, the assaults allegedly took place both at the Hyattsville Fire Station on Belmont Road and at Inman’s residence.

After receiving a tip in July 2024, Prince George’s County Police began investigating. On May 12, 2025, a warrant was issued for Inman’s arrest, and he surrendered to authorities on May 17. He has been charged with second-degree rape, child abuse by a custodian, and other related offenses.

At a court hearing on Monday, a judge ordered Inman to remain on house arrest while awaiting trial.

Investigators are urging anyone who may have been victimized by Inman to come forward. Those with information are encouraged to contact the Child and Vulnerable Adult Abuse Unit at 301-772-4930.
