Police vehicles struck during chase in Montgomery County

Authorities in Montgomery County reported that a routine traffic stop escalated into a dangerous and fast-moving incident Monday afternoon, ultimately ending with a 19-year-old driver taken into custody at a MARC train station in Germantown.

According to a spokesperson for the Montgomery County Police Department, officers from the department’s Fifth District attempted to stop a vehicle around noon. Instead of complying, the driver allegedly refused to pull over and fled, prompting a police pursuit through the area. During the attempted escape, investigators say the driver struck several vehicles, creating a hazardous situation for officers and the public alike.

Police indicated that at least three vehicles were damaged during the incident. Those included a civilian vehicle, an off-duty volunteer fire and rescue vehicle, and a marked Montgomery County police cruiser. Authorities described the damage to all three vehicles as minor. In addition to the collisions, officers reported that the driver attempted to reverse the vehicle toward an officer who was on foot, further escalating the seriousness of the encounter.

Despite the chaotic nature of the pursuit, police said no bystanders were injured. One officer did sustain minor injuries during the incident, but that officer was treated at the scene and did not require transport to a hospital, according to department officials.

The pursuit came to an end at the MARC train station located on Bowman Mill Drive, where officers were able to take the driver into custody without further incident. As of the latest update, police have not released the suspect’s name but confirmed the driver is 19 years old.

Investigators stated that the driver now faces multiple serious charges. These include four counts of first-degree assault, stemming from the alleged attempt to strike an officer and the collisions involving police vehicles. Additional traffic-related offenses are also expected to be filed as part of the case.

Montgomery County police emphasized that the investigation is still active and ongoing as detectives continue to review evidence, interview witnesses, and assess the full scope of the incident. Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the pursuit or has relevant information to contact the Montgomery County Police Department at 301-279-8000.

Officials reiterated that public safety remains a priority and noted that incidents involving fleeing drivers pose significant risks to officers, motorists, and pedestrians throughout the community.
