BETHESDA, Md. — Authorities are asking for the public’s help locating 27-year-old Brandon Smith, who has autism and was reported missing Tuesday afternoon.
The Montgomery County Police have issued a Purple Alert, which is used for missing individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities or brain injuries. It serves as a middle ground between Amber and Silver Alerts, for those who don’t meet the age criteria for either.
Smith was last seen around 5:15 p.m. in the 5400 block of McGrath Boulevard in Bethesda. He may be dressed in a black shirt and camouflage pajama pants.
If you see the individual, call 9-1-1 right away. When interacting with someone who has autism, it’s important to remain calm and approach them slowly. Avoid sudden actions or loud sounds that could be alarming. Use a soft, soothing voice, even if they don’t speak. Above all, prioritize their safety and stay with them until police arrive.
