As the holiday shopping season reaches its peak and retail stores become increasingly crowded, law enforcement officials are urging shoppers to remain vigilant. According to Police Officer First Class Chaudlier Shepherd of the Prince George’s County Police Department, criminals often take advantage of busy shopping environments, actively searching for opportunities to commit theft-related crimes.
While many consumers are focused on completing gift lists and navigating packed stores, police warn that thieves may be observing both shoppers and their vehicles. Officer Shepherd emphasized that criminal activity can occur quickly, sometimes even before a shopper reaches their car. Situations such as pickpocketing remain common, but more aggressive incidents, including strong-arm robberies in which suspects grab items and flee, are also a concern during the holiday season.
To reduce risk, Officer Shepherd advises shoppers to remain constantly aware of their surroundings, particularly in parking lots. He recommends choosing parking spaces that are well-lit and close to store entrances whenever possible. In addition, leaving shopping bags or valuables visible inside a vehicle can attract unwanted attention. Shepherd noted that locked vehicles without visible items are far less likely to be targeted, as thieves typically seek the easiest opportunities.
Properly securing purchases is another key recommendation. Shoppers are encouraged to place items out of sight as soon as possible, rather than leaving them exposed while loading or unloading vehicles. Criminals often walk through parking areas scanning for visible bags or boxes, making uncovered purchases an easy target.
Officer Shepherd also suggested limiting the number of bags carried at one time and avoiding shopping alone when possible. Shopping with friends, family members, or partners can deter potential thieves and provide added safety. Group shopping is a precaution many people overlook, but it can significantly reduce vulnerability.
For additional security, Shepherd recommended installing or using a dashcam, which can offer peace of mind both while parked and while driving. When making multiple shopping stops, he advised placing purchases in the trunk or concealing them with a blanket, cargo cover, or SUV shade to keep them hidden from view.
Police stress that taking these proactive steps can significantly reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of a crime of opportunity during the hectic holiday shopping season.
