After a tragic house fire in Bowie claimed the life of a man on Tuesday night, Prince George’s County firefighters are encouraging residents to take proactive steps to prevent similar incidents.
The fire erupted around 9 p.m. on the second floor of a home in the 11000 block of Elon Drive. By the time fire crews arrived, flames had already spread to the attic. One man was rescued but later died at the hospital. Two other adults managed to escape safely.
In response, firefighters canvassed the neighborhood the next morning, sharing fire prevention tips and checking that homes had functional smoke alarms.
Alan Doubleday, spokesperson for Prince George’s County Fire and EMS, emphasized the importance of working smoke detectors. “That smoke alarm can give you those crucial extra minutes to escape safely,” he said.
The fire department offers free smoke alarm installations and assistance with creating home escape plans. Residents in need can call 301-583-2200, available 24/7.
Doubleday also stressed the importance of practicing home fire drills, ensuring exits are accessible, and teaching children how to escape safely.
He warned against re-entering a burning home, noting the dangers of carbon monoxide and structural instability. “Once you’re out, stay out,” he urged.
In addition, he encouraged residents to check on elderly neighbors and help them with smoke alarm maintenance, highlighting the importance of community support: “It’s really important that we look out for each other.”
