Here’s what we know about those involved in Sunday’s incident.
OXON HILL, Md. — Officials have shared more information about the officer-involved shooting that resulted in one man’s death at National Harbor on Sunday, including the identities of the man who was killed and the officers who shot him.
The Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID) identified the deceased as 44-year-old Aevon Bucknor, Jr., a resident of Oxon Hill. Bucknor was fatally shot by Prince George’s County Police on April 20 after a series of violent events that began earlier in the day.
The officers involved were identified as Corporal Phillip Johnson, who has served 18 years with the department, and Acting Lieutenant James Martinez, a 13-year veteran. Both are currently stationed with the Bureau of Patrol.
Police say the situation began just after 8 a.m. when they responded to a stabbing in the 8300 block of Indian Head Highway. They found a man and woman with severe stab wounds. Investigators believe Bucknor, who was acquainted with the victims, attacked them during a domestic dispute, set the apartment on fire, and fled the scene.
At around 10 a.m., multiple 911 calls were made about an armed individual near the intersection of American Way and Saint George Boulevard in National Harbor.
When officers located Bucknor, he was still armed with a knife and ignored repeated commands to drop it. Corporal Johnson and Lieutenant Martinez opened fire, striking him. Bucknor was transported to the hospital, where he later died. No officers were hurt during the confrontation.
Prince George’s County Police Chief Malik Aziz noted that Bucknor had prior interactions with law enforcement in other areas, stating, “We’ve had previous dealings with this individual, unrelated to today’s events.”
The two stabbing victims remain hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Neighbor Eugene Wood, who lives near the burned apartment, recounted the scene’s chaos.
“When I saw the building, I said, oh my god, that’s her place,” Wood told WUSA9. He said his daughter is close with the child of the woman and Bucknor, who were reportedly separated but still married.
Wood said Bucknor knocked on the door, forced his way in when it was opened, and attacked both the woman and another man who was present before chasing them out and setting the apartment on fire.
Several roads in National Harbor were shut down Sunday evening due to the investigation, including:
- National Harbor Boulevard (Fleet Street to American Way)
- St. George Boulevard (American Way to National Harbor Boulevard)
- All of Potomac Passage
The investigation is still ongoing.
