66 year-old Sunday Joseph has been accused of a tragic incident that occurred in Bladensburg, Maryland, where he allegedly drove his car into a child’s birthday party, striking 14 individuals, including eight children. Among the victims was 31-year-old Ashley Hernandez Gutierrez, who tragically lost her life as a result of the crash. Following his arrest, a judge ordered that Joseph be held without bond, citing the gravity of the charges and the nature of the event.
According to the prosecution, Joseph’s vehicle was seen traveling at full speed in reverse from Annapolis Road before crashing into the front yard of a residence on 56th Avenue, where the birthday celebration was being held. The impact reportedly caused chaos and severe injuries to multiple attendees. After the crash, Joseph allegedly exited his vehicle in a disoriented state and fled the scene on foot. Authorities later charged him with eight offenses, including one felony count of Grossly Negligent Manslaughter by vehicle.
The defense, however, argues that Joseph has no prior criminal record and voluntarily surrendered to the authorities early Sunday morning. Prosecutors, on the other hand, claim that he only turned himself in after being contacted by law enforcement. During Wednesday’s court hearing, Joseph required the assistance of an interpreter, as he speaks Yoruba, a language commonly spoken in parts of West Africa.
In a statement following the court’s decision, the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office expressed deep sympathy for the victims and their families. The office described the incident as a moment that transformed a joyful celebration into a scene of heartbreak and devastation. They emphasized that holding Joseph without bond was appropriate, considering his alleged attempt to flee and the severe consequences of his actions. The prosecution reaffirmed its commitment to seeking justice for Ashley Gutierrez, her family, and all others affected. Joseph’s trial has been scheduled to begin in late January.
