Montgomery County Man Gets 30-Year Sentence for Fatal Drive-By Shooting

Kyler Mcroy, 22, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for his involvement in the 2022 drive-by shooting death of 19-year-old Keon Jones.

According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, Judge Cheryl McCally handed Mcroy a life sentence with all but 30 years suspended. Upon release, Mcroy will also serve five years of supervised probation.

Jones was found with multiple gunshot wounds near Cinnamon Drive and Poppy Seed Lane in Gaithersburg on February 10, 2022. Investigators later linked Mcroy to the suspect vehicle used in the shooting.

During his arrest, police discovered an untraceable “ghost gun” equipped with a 25-round magazine in Mcroy’s bedroom.

Mcroy pleaded guilty on June 11, 2024, to conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and first-degree assault. He also pleaded guilty that same day to using a firearm during a felony in a separate shooting that occurred on March 27, 2022, on Forest View Place in Gaithersburg—just weeks after Jones’ killing.

Judge McCally recommended Mcroy be placed in the Patuxent Youthful Offender Program during his incarceration, which provides therapeutic treatment for individuals with repeated criminal behavior.
