Montgomery County authorities announced that they have identified and charged a 39-year-old man in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in Germantown, Maryland, over the weekend. According to the Montgomery County Department of Police, the suspect, Michael Aaron Lynn of Germantown, has been formally charged with first-degree murder following the death of 34-year-old Kendall Butler.
Police said the incident unfolded late Saturday night in Germantown Square Urban Park. At approximately 11 p.m., an officer who was patrolling the area reportedly heard several gunshots coming from within the park. When the officer entered the area to investigate, he discovered Butler suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders pronounced Butler dead at the scene shortly afterward.
Investigators quickly began canvassing the area and identified three men who were seen exiting the park immediately after the gunfire. Those individuals were later identified as Lynn, 61-year-old Kent Williams Jr., and a 27-year-old man. All three were detained by police as part of the ensuing investigation.
During the arrests, officers recovered handguns from both Lynn and Williams Jr., according to the department’s news release. While Lynn was charged with first-degree murder based on the evidence gathered, Williams Jr. was charged with multiple firearms-related offenses. Authorities stated that both Lynn and Williams Jr. are being held without bond pending future court proceedings. The third man, who was initially taken into custody as a person of interest, was released after investigators determined he was not involved in the shooting.
Police have not yet disclosed a possible motive for the killing, and the investigation remains active. Detectives are continuing to review surveillance footage, interview witnesses, and gather additional evidence to piece together the sequence of events that led to Butler’s death. Officials encouraged anyone with further information about the shooting to contact Montgomery County Police as the case progresses.
