(CUMBERLAND, Md.) — A 28-year-old inmate at the North Branch Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland, was killed in his cell by another prisoner, Maryland State Police reported.
The victim, identified as Robert Warren, was pronounced dead on Monday by emergency medical personnel. Warren, a state prison inmate, was serving time at the facility.
Authorities have identified a suspect, also an inmate at the prison, but have not released his name pending formal charges. Additional information is expected to be provided once charges are filed, police stated.
Details about the cause of death or how long Warren had been deceased before being discovered remain unclear. However, investigators confirmed that the death has been ruled a homicide following an autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is leading the investigation, with support from crime scene technicians and the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit.
Upon completing the investigation, the findings will be submitted to the Allegany County State’s Attorney’s Office for review and potential charges.
The investigation remains active.
