Maryland Community Plans Protest Following Teen’s School Assault

Juanita Caldwell said she has contacted the school, the police chief, Governor Wes Moore, and council members but has received no assistance or answers.

OXON HILL, Md. — On Monday morning, the Oxon Hill community will gather for a rally at Potomac High School to support Kayla, a 14-year-old girl who was assaulted at school on December 5, leaving her with a broken nose and hand.

Kayla’s mother, Juanita Caldwell, told WUSA9 that her daughter has been experiencing nightmares since the attack.

“She woke up at 3 a.m. saying she dreamt the same people put a hit on her,” Caldwell said.

On December 5, Caldwell claims her daughter was assaulted, resulting in a broken nose, hand, and multiple bruises. A video obtained by WUSA9 appears to show Kayla being punched in the head while on the floor of a closet at the school.

Caldwell said school staff informed her that the attack involved a group of seven girls and was linked to an earlier altercation that day. According to her, the girls responsible for the assault have not been arrested.

“I want them arrested. If not them, then arrest their parents,” Caldwell demanded.

Community activist Joseph Tolbert has organized Monday’s rally to raise awareness and express frustration with the Prince George’s County Police Department and the Attorney General’s office.

“We have video evidence. These children can easily be identified, yet no arrests have been made. I’m deeply disappointed in the PGCPD and the Attorney General’s office. It’s unacceptable,” Tolbert stated.

Tolbert also hopes the rally will serve as a warning to students.

“We want to send a clear message that this behavior—attacking others at school and walking away without consequences—will not be tolerated,” he said.

Details remain unclear about how many students were involved or what actions will be taken against them.

Caldwell said her efforts to get help went unnoticed until the incident gained media attention.

“They didn’t care until I took this to the news,” she said.

Caldwell is scheduled to meet with Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy to discuss the case.

The rally will take place on Monday, December 16, at 7 a.m. at Potomac High School in Oxon Hill.
