Man in Custody After Fatal Shooting and Standoff in Seat Pleasant

A man is in custody following a fatal shooting and a standoff that lasted over four hours Friday in Seat Pleasant, Maryland.

According to Seat Pleasant Police, an officer on patrol found a man shot to death inside a vehicle around 9:30 a.m. on the 6400 block of Greig Street. The suspected shooter fled into a nearby apartment building, where he barricaded himself for several hours before surrendering shortly before 2 p.m.

“This is a tragic situation,” said Acting Corporal Nicholas Griffith of the Seat Pleasant Police Department. “Our officers responded immediately and were already in the area when the shooting was discovered. We want the public to know their safety is always our top priority.”

The case has now been turned over to the Prince George’s County Police homicide unit. Investigators are still working to determine the relationship, if any, between the suspect and the victim, and it remains unclear whether the apartment where the suspect hid belonged to him.

“The suspect is currently in custody for questioning,” said Brian Fischer, a spokesperson for Prince George’s County Police. “This is an active and ongoing investigation.”

During the incident, Greig Street was closed between Addison Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Highway, while MLK Jr. Highway was shut down between Addison Road and Foote Street. All roadways have since reopened.

Police believe this was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
