A man is being held after operating a stolen forklift on Maryland’s I-495

Police report that a man crashed a stolen forklift and attempted to flee before being apprehended shortly after.

DISTRICT HEIGHTS, Md. — A man is in custody after allegedly stealing a forklift and later crashing it Thursday morning in District Heights.

According to the Prince George’s County Police Department, officers received a call around 6:40 a.m. regarding a stolen forklift on Westphalia Road in Upper Marlboro.

Investigators say the suspect drove the forklift onto the Capital Beltway before crashing near the 11A exit. After the crash, he abandoned the vehicle and tried to escape on foot.

Officers caught up with him a short time later on Penn Belt Place in District Heights. In total, he traveled approximately 1.5 miles before being stopped by police.

Authorities confirmed that no other vehicles were involved, and no injuries were reported.

It is unclear at this time what charges the suspect may face.
