Wilson Chavis could face up to 65 years in prison, with his sentencing set for July 11.
PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. — A man was found guilty on Thursday for fatally shooting another man during a funeral in Prince George’s County for a 10-year-old girl who had been killed by gun violence.
Wilson Chavis, 50, was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of 30-year-old Ronald Banks.
The incident took place on June 6, 2023, at Suitland’s Washington National Cemetery, where mourners had gathered to honor the life of 10-year-old Arianna Davis. Tragically, the violence that claimed Davis’ life resurfaced at her own funeral.
According to court records, Chavis began shouting profanities at the pastor and two individuals associated with a competing funeral service company during the burial. When he pushed the pastor, several attendees, including Banks, tried to intervene.
Chavis then pulled out a firearm and opened fire, striking both Banks and a woman.
State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy described the tragedy as especially devastating, given that it unfolded at the funeral of Davis, the youngest victim of gun violence in D.C.
“It was just an unthinkable, senseless act of violence,” Braveboy said.
Banks was rushed to a hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
Assistant State’s Attorney William Porter recalled the heartbreaking impact of the shooting, sharing that Davis’ mother was unable to witness her daughter’s burial due to the chaos.
“She had to be told later where her daughter was laid to rest,” Porter said.
Since the 2023 shooting, Braveboy has focused on curbing violence in Prince George’s County.
Recent crime data shows a decline in homicides—from 10 at this time last year to five in 2024.
“While even one loss of life is too many, we believe our efforts, along with our law enforcement partners, are making a difference,” Braveboy said.
