Ellicott City, MD – The Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID) is now leading the inquiry into a deadly police-involved shooting that occurred in Columbia on June 9, as required under state law.
The incident began around 7:24 p.m. when Howard County police responded to the 9200 block of Wilbur Court, where a man in his 20s reported being repeatedly stabbed by a family member who had fled the scene.
Just two minutes later, another man—also in his 20s—called 911 from the area of Oakland Mills Road and Carters Lane, stating that he was armed.
An officer located the suspect, who was wielding a large spear. Witnesses say the man advanced toward the officer and ignored commands to drop the weapon. The officer then shot the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Further details about the shooting or the number of shots fired have not yet been released.
No officers were injured during the encounter. The stabbing victim remains in critical condition at Shock Trauma.
In accordance with Maryland law, the IID is now handling the investigation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
