Goodbye to a Legend: Maryland Zoo Grieves the Loss of Beloved Hornbill, North

Zookeepers say North had a lively personality and enjoyed the attention of both visitors and staff.

MARYLAND, USA — The Maryland Zoo announced Monday the passing of North, a northern ground hornbill.

North had been a beloved part of the zoo since 2013, after being transferred from Florida to breed with Blue, another northern ground hornbill.

Although the pair bonded, North initially struggled with fatherhood, repeatedly destroying Blue’s eggs over the years. Determined to help them succeed, zookeepers devised a solution—providing a wine barrel just big enough for Blue to nest safely. This strategy finally worked, and in July 2023, the pair welcomed their first chick, Everest. Nearly a year later, they had a second chick, Rwenzori, affectionately called Rwen.

Throughout his time at the zoo, North dealt with mobility issues, a condition that worsened with age. Despite these challenges, he remained a charismatic presence, often approaching the fence to offer rocks and sticks to staff and visitors.

“Without a doubt, North was one of the most amazing and personable birds to ever enter our collection,” said Kottyan.

As his health declined, the zoo made the difficult but necessary decision to humanely euthanize North.
