Frederick Man Sentenced to 17 Years for Firearm and Drug-Related Crimes

Frederick, Md (KM) — A Frederick man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for multiple felony charges involving weapons and drug offenses. Ezra Malik Smith, 25, received the sentence on Tuesday, with credit for time served since February 2025.

According to the State’s Attorney’s Office, Smith pleaded guilty in August to illegal possession of a regulated firearm following a prior conviction for a violent crime, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, and wearing and carrying a firearm in connection with a drug trafficking offense.

Smith was arrested on February 25, 2025, when Frederick County Sheriff’s Office detectives executed a search warrant at an apartment building on Motter Avenue where he was staying. Authorities said he was taken into custody in the building’s elevator, and after being escorted outside, he attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended.

At the time of his arrest, investigators found a handgun, two loaded extended-capacity magazines, ten grams of cocaine, a digital scale, and a cell phone in Smith’s possession. A subsequent search of the phone revealed conversations suggesting Smith’s involvement in illegal drug distribution.

Upon release from prison, Smith will serve five years of supervised probation.

State’s Attorney Charlie Smith commended Assistant State’s Attorney Paul Tumulty for his work on the case, stating, “Our community is safer knowing this individual will serve a substantial sentence for his crimes.”
