BALTIMORE, MD – Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced that Cheryl Leigh Gray, 50, of Middletown, has pleaded guilty in Frederick County Circuit Court to felony theft ranging from $25,000 to $100,000. The case was investigated by the Attorney General’s Fraud and Corruption Unit and the Maryland Insurance Administration.
Gray had previously been convicted in a separate Frederick County felony theft case related to her work as an insurance producer. Although she had repaid $305,995.55 in restitution, she still owed $63,536.46. As part of her supervised probation, she was required to pay the remaining balance.
To cover the restitution, Gray devised a new fraud scheme, stealing $65,000 from a friend by falsely claiming she needed the money for medical treatment when, in reality, she was using it to settle her prior theft case.
Gray is scheduled for sentencing on March 17, 2025, in Frederick County Circuit Court.
Attorney General Brown expressed gratitude to his Criminal Division team, including Fraud and Corruption Unit Chief Alex Huggins and Assistant Attorney General Timothy Lake, as well as forensic and investigative staff from the Maryland Insurance Administration. He also acknowledged Frederick County State’s Attorney J. Charles Smith III for his support in the prosecution.
