Frederick County Health Department Seeking Owner of Dog That Bit Child

Health Officials Seek Dog Owner After Child Bitten Near Tuscarora Elementary

FREDERICK, Md. — The Frederick County Health Department is searching for the owner of a dog that bit a child near Tuscarora Elementary School on Wednesday morning.

Officials say the child was riding a scooter across a crosswalk near the school when the dog bit them on the arm.

The dog is described as a medium-sized, short-haired black dog with floppy ears. The owner is reportedly a short, older woman with braids who was walking the dog at the time of the incident.

Health officials need to locate the owner to assess the dog’s health and place it under quarantine, which can be done at the owner’s home. If the dog remains healthy after 10 days, it will be released from quarantine, and the child can avoid unnecessary rabies treatment.

Anyone who recognizes the dog or has information is urged to contact Animal Control at 301-600-1544.

The Frederick County Health Department also advises individuals who are bitten or scratched by a dog or cat to obtain the owner’s contact information and report the incident to Animal Control. Potential rabies exposures should be reported to Community Health Services at 301-600-3342. General questions about rabies can be directed to Environmental Health Services at 301-600-1717 or by visiting Frederick County Rabies Information.
