Fleeing Driver Strikes and Kills Pedestrian in Chillum, Officials Report

CHILLUM, Md. — Officials in Prince George’s County and the Maryland Attorney General’s Office are investigating a deadly crash that occurred early Saturday morning.

Details remain limited. The Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID) reported a “police-involved” crash around 1:45 a.m. Initially, the crash was believed to have occurred in Hyattsville, but police later confirmed it took place in Chillum near the intersection of 23rd Avenue and East-West Highway, close to Riggs Manor Neighborhood Park.

According to a preliminary investigation, the incident began around 10:15 p.m. when Hyattsville Police attempted to stop a Lincoln sedan along the 3300 block of East-West Highway. The driver initially complied before fleeing. Officers pursued briefly but ended the chase near the intersection of East-West Highway and 23rd Avenue.

The driver continued at high speed, veered onto the highway shoulder, and struck a pedestrian. The officer on scene responded immediately. The driver was taken into custody and hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, while the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet identified the victim, but expect to release the name in the coming days.

The involved officer was equipped with a body-worn camera, and the vehicle had a dash camera. The IID generally releases footage within 20 business days.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the IID at (410) 576-7070 or via email at IID@oag.state.md.us.
