Fire officials believe recharging batteries likely sparked house fire

POTOMAC, Md. — A house fire that broke out Wednesday night is believed to have been sparked by batteries being recharged, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue.

The blaze began in a detached garage and extended to the home’s exterior. Fire crews responded around 8:30 p.m. to the residence located at 9400 Holbrook Drive, near Falls Road. Spokesperson Pete Piringer noted that battery chargers were found near the fire’s origin point, suggesting they may have triggered the incident, though other potential ignition sources on a nearby shelf haven’t been completely ruled out.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, the fire caused more than $200,000 in estimated damages and displaced three residents.

The Fire Safety Research Institute’s “Take Charge of Battery Safety” campaign advises the public to use only manufacturer-approved chargers, keep batteries away from heat and flammable items, and avoid charging large devices like e-bikes or scooters indoors, overnight, or near exits.
