Father faces murder charges in Prince George’s County infant death case

Authorities in Prince George’s County, Maryland, have charged a 24-year-old man in connection with the death of his four-month-old son, an incident that occurred late last weekend and has prompted renewed concern about the vulnerability of infants and young children.

According to police, Khalil Brooks-Clarke was arrested and formally charged with first- and second-degree murder, as well as first- and second-degree child abuse, following the death of his infant son, Kairo Brooks. The charges stem from an incident reported in the early morning hours of Dec. 27.

Law enforcement officials said officers were dispatched around 12:40 a.m. to an apartment building in the 5400 block of Morris Avenue after receiving a call about an unresponsive infant. Emergency responders attempted to assist the child, who was transported to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, the baby was pronounced dead a short time later.

An autopsy conducted by the medical examiner’s office determined that the cause of death was blunt force trauma. Investigators said their preliminary findings indicated that Brooks-Clarke was the only caregiver present with the infant at the time the injuries were sustained, a key factor in the decision to file criminal charges.

Prince George’s County Police Chief George Nader addressed the case in a public statement, emphasizing the tragic nature of incidents involving very young children. He noted that in many situations involving infant abuse, authorities are unable to intervene before fatal harm occurs. Nader described infants and children as some of the most defenseless individuals in the community, entirely dependent on caregivers for protection and well-being.

The police chief also highlighted the broader issue of domestic violence, pointing out that victims—particularly children—often lack the ability to advocate for themselves or report abuse. He stressed the responsibility of the community and law enforcement to act on behalf of those who cannot speak for their own safety.

Brooks-Clarke is currently being held at the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections as the case moves through the judicial process. Investigators said the inquiry remains active, and they are continuing to gather information related to the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have relevant information to contact Prince George’s County Police directly at 301-516-2512. Individuals who wish to remain anonymous can submit tips through the department’s tip line at 1-866-411-8477.
