TEMPLE HILLS, Md. — An 80-year-old woman died and two others were injured after a car parked on the shoulder of I-495 was struck by another vehicle on Sunday, according to Maryland State Police.
The crash occurred just south of Temple Hills Road around 12:30 p.m. A Toyota Sienna, occupied by a 65-year-old male driver and two female passengers, ages 72 and 80, was stopped on the right shoulder. A Volkswagen Jetta, driven by a 23-year-old man, veered out of the travel lanes and crashed into the parked vehicle.
The 80-year-old woman was transported to University of Maryland Capital Regional Hospital, where she later died. The 72-year-old woman was taken to the same hospital, and the 65-year-old driver was taken to Suburban Hospital. Both survived, though their conditions have not been disclosed.
The Volkswagen driver was hospitalized at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus, but his condition has not been released.
Investigators have not determined why the driver left the roadway. The Maryland State Police are continuing to investigate the crash.
