Domestic Violence Call Leads to Officer Shooting and Eight-Hour Standoff in Hagerstown

HAGERSTOWN, Md. — A police officer in Hagerstown is recovering after undergoing surgery from a gunshot wound sustained during a domestic violence response early Thursday morning.

Officers were dispatched to a residence on the 700 block of Forrest Drive around 5 a.m. Upon arrival, they were met by a woman—later identified as the suspect’s wife—who showed visible signs of physical abuse. Two children were also inside the home at the time.

First responders were called in to assist. The woman and children were safely removed, and the woman received medical attention in an ambulance on-site.

Meanwhile, two officers continued to search the home and found Daniel Matthew Anderson barricaded inside a room. They tried to convince him to come out peacefully, but he refused. When officers forced entry into the room, Anderson fired a shotgun blast, striking one officer in the arm.

The officers withdrew immediately, and the injured officer was treated by medics and transported to a hospital.

Following the shooting, law enforcement, including the Washington County Police Department’s Crisis Negotiation Team, surrounded the home and attempted to negotiate with Anderson for the next eight hours.

At approximately 4:35 p.m., Anderson surrendered and was taken into custody. He is expected to be held at the Washington County Detention Center and face multiple charges. The injured officer is currently recovering post-surgery.
