A serious crash in Frederick County, Maryland, on Sunday left two people dead and led to the closure of part of Interstate 70 while police investigated the scene.
Maryland State Police said troopers from the Frederick Barrack responded to the crash near Exit 62 in the New Market area around 4:10 p.m.
According to investigators, a BMW SUV heading west on I-70 rear-ended a box truck. The impact caused the box truck to veer across the median and collide with an oncoming tractor-trailer traveling eastbound. Both large vehicles were pushed off the road into a wooded area, where they caught fire.
Two individuals in the box truck died at the scene, police reported.
The drivers of the box truck and the tractor-trailer were airlifted to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. Their current conditions are unknown.
The BMW’s driver declined medical attention, but two passengers from the SUV were taken to Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown for treatment.
Eastbound lanes of I-70 remain closed between Routes 75 and 27, while westbound traffic has resumed, according to WTOP’s Traffic Center.
Frederick County Fire and Rescue and the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration are also assisting at the scene.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the Maryland State Police Crash Team.
