A D.C. woman is facing charges after allegedly misusing her grandfather’s money to cover more than $266,000 in personal expenses.
Montgomery County Police say 45-year-old Erica Hopper was granted power of attorney over her grandfather’s finances in December 2020, giving her responsibility to manage his affairs in his best interest. Instead, investigators allege she spent the funds on luxury items, credit card bills, and rent for a high-end D.C. apartment.
Between 2020 and 2024, police say Hopper withdrew about $266,000 from her 95-year-old grandfather’s account. The money allegedly went toward more than $25,000 in car payments, over $49,000 in credit card bills for cosmetic surgery, designer clothing, concert tickets, online shopping, and more than $35,000 in apartment rent.
Following the investigation, Hopper was charged with theft over $100,000, a theft scheme over $100,000, obtaining property from a vulnerable adult over $100,000, embezzlement, and fraudulent identity theft of $25,000 to $100,000.
She was processed and later released on an unsecured personal bond.
