Canadian high school shooting: Police say at least one suspect found dead

An active shooter incident prompted a major police response Tuesday at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Authorities confirmed that at least one suspect has been located deceased, though investigators are still working to determine whether additional suspects may be involved.

The Tumbler Ridge RCMP stated that the “original suspect” is believed to be dead. However, officials have not yet confirmed the total number of victims or whether anyone was injured during the incident. In an official statement, police said they currently have no confirmation regarding how many individuals may have been hurt or required medical assistance.

Law enforcement officers remain heavily deployed in the area as the investigation continues. A localized police emergency alert has been issued, urging residents in Tumbler Ridge to shelter in place. Authorities are advising people to stay indoors, lock their doors, and avoid leaving their homes or workplaces until further notice.

Additional support has been requested from neighboring RCMP detachments, and the North District Emergency Response Team has been dispatched to assist with securing the scene and ensuring public safety.

The Peace River South School District acknowledged that both Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and Tumbler Ridge Elementary School were placed under lockdown or “secure and hold” procedures as a precaution. School officials asked families and community members for patience while they coordinate closely with RCMP officers managing the situation.

Larry Neufeld, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Peace River South, confirmed he is traveling back to the region as the situation unfolds. In a public statement, he emphasized that public safety remains the highest priority and said he has been in direct contact with the province’s Solicitor General to ensure all necessary resources are available to support local law enforcement and emergency responders. He also urged residents to follow RCMP instructions and rely solely on official updates to avoid misinformation.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the Tumbler Ridge school shooting. Officials have indicated that updates will be provided as more verified information becomes available in this developing story.
