Investigators in Loudoun County are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding a fatal crash that occurred overnight in the Brambleton area, leaving one woman dead and resulting in criminal charges against the driver.
According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of a single-vehicle crash shortly before midnight on Saturday. The incident took place on Olympia Drive near the intersection with Ringneck Place. When first responders arrived at the scene, they discovered a severely damaged vehicle and two occupants who had been involved in the crash.
Authorities identified the passenger as 29-year-old Katherine Leal. Despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not released further details regarding her condition prior to the crash or whether she was wearing a seat belt at the time of the incident.
The driver of the vehicle, 36-year-old Anvesh Hungenalli, sustained injuries that were described as non-life-threatening. He was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Following the investigation at the scene and subsequent findings, Hungenalli was charged with driving under the influence. Law enforcement officials confirmed that alcohol is believed to have played a role in the crash, though toxicology results and additional evidence are still being reviewed.
Investigators are working to determine what factors contributed to the crash, including vehicle speed, road conditions, and whether impairment influenced the driver’s ability to maintain control of the vehicle. Because the crash involved only one vehicle, authorities are focusing on reconstructing the sequence of events leading up to the incident.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office stated that the investigation remains active and ongoing. As additional information becomes available, further charges could be filed depending on the outcome of the investigation and any new evidence that emerges. Deputies are also asking for the public’s assistance and encourage anyone who may have witnessed the crash or observed suspicious driving behavior in the area around the time of the incident to contact law enforcement.
Officials noted that crashes involving impaired driving continue to be a serious concern, particularly during overnight hours. The sheriff’s office emphasized the importance of making responsible decisions behind the wheel to prevent tragedies such as this one.
No additional details have been released at this time as investigators continue their work.
