Maryland teenager charged as an adult for purported stabbing in high school restroom

A violent incident at Great Mills High School in St. Mary’s County, Maryland has led to serious charges after a teenage student allegedly stabbed a classmate during a fight inside the school. Authorities say the suspect, a 17-year-old student, is now being charged as an adult following the shocking school stabbing that left another student hospitalized.

According to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened around noon on Tuesday. Investigators said the situation began when two students got into an argument inside a bathroom at the high school. What started as a confrontation quickly escalated into violence.

Police say the 17-year-old suspect allegedly pulled out a knife during the altercation and stabbed the other student once in the chest area. Reports indicate the wound was located just below the victim’s pectoral muscle. The injured student, who is 19 years old, was immediately treated as a medical emergency.

Emergency responders were quickly called to the school. Because of the seriousness of the injury, the victim was airlifted by helicopter from the school’s baseball field to a nearby hospital shortly before 1 p.m. Fortunately, officials later confirmed that the student’s condition improved, and he was released from the hospital the following afternoon. Authorities say he is now recovering from the stab wound.

Law enforcement officers quickly secured the school after the attack. The 17-year-old suspect was taken into custody at the scene without further incident. Deputies also recovered the weapon believed to have been used in the attack, which investigators described as a folding pocketknife.

Even though the suspect is a minor, authorities confirmed he will face serious charges as an adult. Those charges include first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and possession of a dangerous weapon on school property. Because of the suspect’s age, court documents and additional details about the case have not yet been made public.

The incident caused a major response around the school. Students were temporarily held inside their classrooms while a school resource officer secured the building and ensured there were no additional threats.

Nearby residents also noticed the emergency activity. One neighbor, Edward Harris, told local media he saw the helicopter circling before landing near the school and later learned that a stabbing had taken place. He said he was relieved to hear the suspect had already been taken into custody and was not posing a further threat.

Officials praised the quick response from the school’s resource officer, medical personnel, and nursing staff, who helped stabilize the victim before he was transported to the hospital. Authorities say their fast actions helped prevent the situation from becoming even more serious.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation into the Great Mills High School stabbing is still ongoing. Detectives are continuing to look into what led to the fight and what may have caused the violent confrontation between the two students.
