Burtonsville double murder: Man convicted in 2018 case to be sentenced Tuesday

A West Virginia man convicted in a deadly 2018 home invasion in Burtonsville, Maryland, is scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday in Montgomery County Circuit Court. Gregory Jones, 32, was found guilty for the second time on multiple serious charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and two counts of using a firearm during the commission of a felony.

The convictions stem from the fatal shooting of Ashley Dickinson and Joshua Frazier in Montgomery County nearly eight years ago. In December 2025, a jury once again determined that Jones was responsible for the execution-style killings, marking the conclusion of a retrial after his original conviction was overturned on appeal.

Prosecutors said the case dates back to 2018, when Frazier and Dickinson traveled to Silver Spring to collect a $900 debt that authorities say Jones owed. According to charging documents and statements from the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, Jones entered the victims’ SUV and shot both individuals in the head before fleeing the scene. Investigators later used cellphone records to establish a connection between Jones and Frazier, strengthening the prosecution’s case.

Jones was initially convicted in December 2021 and sentenced to two life terms without the possibility of parole. However, that conviction was later vacated following an appeal, leading to a retrial. After hearing evidence again, a Montgomery County jury reaffirmed his guilt late last year.

At Tuesday’s sentencing hearing, Jones faces the possibility of two life sentences without parole, in addition to up to 40 extra years in prison related to the firearm and conspiracy charges. He is already serving a separate 30-year prison sentence for a 2017 home invasion and robbery conviction.

Following the guilty verdict, Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy described the killings as a “vicious, execution-style double murder” and expressed sympathy for the victims’ families, who endured two lengthy trials in pursuit of justice.

Jones is expected to appear in court at 1:30 p.m., where a judge will determine the final sentence in the high-profile Montgomery County double homicide case.
