Second fatality confirmed after deadly Chillum house fire

A deadly house fire in Chillum, Maryland, has now claimed the lives of two residents following the weekend blaze, according to the Prince George’s County Fire Department. The tragic incident occurred Sunday morning and remains under active investigation as officials work to determine the cause.

Fire crews were dispatched shortly after 9:30 a.m. to the 900 block of Somerset Place in Chillum after receiving reports of a residential fire. Upon arrival, firefighters observed heavy smoke and flames coming from the basement of a single-family home. Crews quickly began fire suppression efforts while simultaneously conducting search and rescue operations inside the residence.

During the response, firefighters removed three individuals from the home — one woman and two men. All three victims were transported to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment. Authorities later confirmed that the woman died as a result of her injuries. One of the men was initially reported to be in stable condition and expected to survive. However, officials have since confirmed that the second man also succumbed to injuries sustained in the fire.

The identities of the victims have not yet been publicly released, pending notification of next of kin. Fire officials have not disclosed additional details regarding the extent of injuries or whether smoke inhalation or burns were the primary causes.

On Monday, members of the Prince George’s County Fire Department returned to the Somerset Place neighborhood to conduct post-incident community outreach. These efforts typically include checking on nearby residents, providing fire safety information, and ensuring working smoke alarms are installed in surrounding homes.

The cause of the Chillum house fire remains under investigation. Fire investigators are examining the scene to determine how the blaze started and whether any safety hazards contributed to the deadly outcome.

Authorities have not indicated whether the fire is believed to be accidental or suspicious at this time. Additional updates are expected as investigators gather more information about the circumstances surrounding the fatal basement fire in Prince George’s County.
