One hospitalized following basement fire at Gaithersburg home

Montgomery County fire officials say a house fire in Gaithersburg on Monday night was likely accidental and may have been caused by an unattended heat gun used during a hobby project. The fire resulted in an estimated $75,000 in property damage and displaced multiple residents and pets.

According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, emergency crews were dispatched around 8:15 p.m. to a reported fire at a single-family home located on Kingfisher Terrace, near Quail Valley Boulevard. More than a dozen firefighters responded to the scene and were able to bring the flames under control before the fire spread further through the residence.

Fire officials confirmed that two adults and three dogs were displaced as a result of the blaze. One individual was transported to a local hospital for evaluation of possible burn injuries and smoke inhalation. Authorities said the injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Pete Piringer, a spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, stated that investigators believe the fire originated during a hobby activity inside the home. Preliminary findings indicate that a resident had been using a heat gun to restore diecast metal toy cars. The heat gun was reportedly left unattended and placed too close to combustible materials, which likely caused the fire to ignite.

While the investigation into the exact cause remains ongoing, officials emphasized that the incident appears to be accidental. Fire safety officials continue to remind residents to closely monitor heating tools and keep them away from flammable items, especially during home projects or hobby work.

The American Red Cross has been contacted to assist the displaced residents with temporary housing and other immediate needs. No additional details about the incident have been released at this time.

Fire officials said updates will be provided if new information becomes available as the investigation concludes.
