A deadly early morning crash on Interstate 95 in Elkridge, Maryland, left one person dead and sent two others to area hospitals on Monday, according to the Maryland State Police. The collision involved a dump truck and a tractor-trailer and occurred during the morning commute, causing significant traffic disruptions and prompting a large emergency response.
State police reported that the crash happened at approximately 5:30 a.m. on southbound I-95, in the stretch of roadway between the Harbor Tunnel Thruway, also known as Interstate 895, and Maryland Route 100. Preliminary findings indicate that the dump truck struck the rear of a tractor-trailer that was parked along the highway at the time of the collision. The force of the impact caused extensive damage to both vehicles.
The driver of the dump truck suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. A passenger who was also inside the dump truck at the time of the crash sustained serious injuries and required immediate medical attention. That individual was transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital for treatment. The driver of the tractor-trailer was also injured in the collision and was taken to a hospital by ground transport. Authorities have not released information regarding the current conditions of the two hospitalized individuals.
Maryland State Police continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the crash, including why the tractor-trailer was parked on the roadway and what factors may have contributed to the dump truck colliding with it. Investigators are expected to examine vehicle positions, roadway conditions, and potential mechanical or human factors as part of the ongoing inquiry.
As a result of the investigation, all southbound lanes of I-95 were temporarily closed, creating significant traffic delays during the morning rush. While lanes have since reopened and drivers are now able to pass through the area, officials warned that residual delays may continue, particularly for commuters traveling from Baltimore toward Washington, D.C.
Traffic officials advised motorists to plan for extra travel time and remain alert when driving through the area. Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains active and that additional details will be released as they become available. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers present on major highways, especially during early morning hours when visibility and reaction times may be reduced.
