According to authorities, a suspect on crutches played a role in helping a group steal a vehicle in Anne Arundel County

Authorities in Anne Arundel County continue to unravel an unusual and unsettling carjacking that unfolded in the early hours of Friday morning, raising the question of whether a man on crutches played a deliberate role in the incident. Investigators are still piecing together the sequence of events and the intentions of the individuals involved.

According to police, the search for three suspects is ongoing. The case centers on a driver who was traveling along the 500 block of Brock Bridge Road near Laurel shortly after 1:20 a.m. On that stretch of roadway — narrow, twisting, and surrounded by shadows — there are few signs of life after dark. The area holds only a modest park and long stretches of empty roadside, making the encounter even more unusual.

The driver reported that a man using crutches suddenly stepped into the roadway, forcing him to hit the brakes. What appeared at first to be a person in need quickly escalated into something far more threatening. As the driver stopped, two more men emerged from the tree line. Officers said one of them may have been armed with a shotgun. Without hesitation, the trio confronted the driver and demanded his vehicle. They struck the window, ordered him out, and ultimately pulled him from the car before fleeing in the stolen vehicle.

Justin Mulcahy, spokesperson for the Anne Arundel County Police Department, explained that detectives are examining whether similar tactics have been used in nearby jurisdictions. They are coordinating with surrounding law enforcement agencies to determine whether this incident aligns with any known patterns or previous carjackings in the region.

The investigation remains active, and police are urging anyone who may have seen something — no matter how small the detail — to come forward. Tips can be reported to investigators at 410-222-4730.
