Riverdale Man Killed in Officer-Involved Shooting Identified

Maryland authorities have released the identity of a Riverdale man who was fatally shot by the Cheverly police chief earlier this week.

According to the state attorney general’s office, 45-year-old Tesfa Leith was killed on Tuesday when Chief David Morris opened fire in the 6600 block of Greenland Street. Officers were in the area investigating a vehicle they believed was connected to a stabbing in Cheverly.

Police reported that Leith was spotted outside holding two knives. Despite commands to drop the weapons, he advanced toward the officers. A Prince George’s County officer attempted to subdue him with a taser, but it had no effect. Moments later, Chief Morris discharged his firearm, striking Leith.

Officers on scene provided medical aid until emergency personnel arrived, but Leith was pronounced dead where he was found.

Chief Morris has since been placed on restricted duty while the incident is under investigation. The attorney general’s office is asking anyone with information or video evidence of the encounter to contact them at (410) 576-7070.
