63-Year-Old Bus Driver Dies of Heart Attack After Safely Stopping Vehicle, Potentially Saving Passengers

GAITHERSBURG, Md. — Montgomery County is mourning the loss of Ruiz Bell, a longtime Ride On bus driver who suffered a fatal heart attack while on duty but managed to safely stop the bus before collapsing, likely preventing harm to his passengers.

Bell, 63, had worked for the Maryland County Department of Transportation since 2012 and was driving the southbound Route 55 when the incident occurred. Known as a devoted father of 10 and a passionate fan of golf, grilling, and the Dallas Cowboys, Bell was also active in his union, serving as a shop steward for UFCW Local 1994 (MCGEO).

County Executive Marc Elrich honored Bell’s life and final act of bravery, noting his sense of humor, kindness, and calm demeanor even in crisis.

“That kind of calm under pressure tells you a lot about the person he was,” Elrich said. “His loss is a hard one, and he will be missed.”

Passengers reportedly attempted to assist Bell after realizing something was wrong.
