LAUREL, Md. — Three adults and one child were taken to the hospital with minor symptoms after a strong chlorine smell prompted the evacuation of 20 people from the indoor pool area at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites on Saturday evening.
Prince George’s County Fire and Rescue reported that four individuals experienced mild health issues related to the odor. Hazmat crews responded to the scene to investigate and mitigate the smell. The entire five-story hotel was evacuated around 6:10 p.m.
Emergency Medical Services were on-site evaluating others for potential symptoms. Officials confirmed that the illnesses were not life-threatening and were likely caused by the odor of cleaning chemicals, which led to the intense chlorine smell.
The hotel’s website indicates that the Laurel Lakes location is currently under renovation but remains open to guests.
