A tragic crash in Prince George’s County, Maryland, on Friday night claimed the life of a child after a driver fleeing a traffic stop collided with multiple vehicles in Capitol Heights.
According to the Maryland Office of the Attorney General, the incident began around 6:25 p.m. in the 6000 block of Marlboro Pike when a District Heights Police officer attempted to stop an Infiniti SUV. Although the driver initially pulled over, they quickly sped off toward Addison Road South.
Other officers from District Heights and Capitol Heights spotted the fleeing vehicle and tried to stop it again on Addison Road South. However, the driver soon crashed into four other cars in the 1200 block of the road.
A child riding in one of the vehicles involved was rushed to a hospital but tragically did not survive. A woman in the same vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Others involved in the crash had minor injuries, officials said.
The driver of the Infiniti was apprehended and taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division is reviewing the incident, including footage from officers’ body-worn cameras and dash cameras from two patrol vehicles.
