MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — A Montgomery County police officer was hospitalized Friday evening following a crash near Gaithersburg that caused their patrol car to catch fire.
The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Snouffer School Road and Flower Hill Way. According to the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD), the officer was responding to reports of a shooting when their vehicle collided with another car on the road.
The crash ignited the patrol car, trapping the officer inside. Another MCPD officer managed to extinguish the flames and rescue the trapped officer.
“Moments after receiving notification that the police cruiser was on fire with the officer trapped inside,” MCPD shared in a Friday evening statement.
Both the officer and the civilian driver involved in the crash were transported to the hospital. The officer sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the civilian’s injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.
