85-Year-Old Bicyclist Struck in Silver Spring Succumbs to Injuries at Hospital

SILVER SPRING, Md. — A bicyclist has died following a collision with an SUV last weekend, and police say the investigation is still ongoing.

The crash occurred around 4 p.m. on June 1 in the 15000 block of Bramblewood Drive, near The Fairways condominiums. Emergency crews responded to the scene after reports of a collision involving a cyclist.

According to investigators, 85-year-old Joel Allen Katz of Silver Spring was riding his bike when he was struck by a 2015 blue Mercedes-Benz SUV that was reversing out of a driveway. Katz sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital.

He died from his injuries on Saturday, nearly a week after the crash. Authorities have not yet determined if charges will be filed against the driver. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.
